In the latest chapter of freak show boxing fights, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. missed weight (again) by two pounds for his
highly anticipated matchup against Anderson “The Spider” Silva. Silva, one of the GOATs of MMA, is automatically $100,000 richer for the gaffe by the younger Chavez. The fight is being contested at a catch weight of 182-pounds.
This isn’t Chavez Jr.’s first battle with the scale. He’s missed weight multiple times in his career including a 2019 bout against Daniel Jacobs in which he had to forfeit $1 million. Chavez Jr. normally fights at 175lbs.
“The Spider” returns to boxing for the first time since 2005. He was a bit busy during that time accumulating one of the greatest careers in MMA history. Silva went undefeated for seven years, 16 title defenses, during his UFC run. Silva, a Muay Thai expert, is statistically considered one of the most accurate strikers in MMA history.
The matchup is intriguing considering Silva’s background and Chavez Jr’s lack of commitment to boxing over the past few years. Draft King’s David Fucillo expressed the same sentiment although he would slot the odds at Chavez Jr -700 and Silva as the +500 underdog.
