Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum (24-9-1) returns to the cage for the first time since his win over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC Fight Island 3. This time the cage will look a bit different as Werdum debuts with PFL and will take on fellow Brazilian Renan Ferreira (6-2) from Team Nogueira.
Tonight’s contest marks the first time Werdum has fought outside of the Octagon in nearly ten years (StrikeForce: Dallas). Werdum talked with Super Lutas about his decision to leave UFC.
“The decision to leave (the UFC) was 100% mine. I wanted to leave the UFC. I decided to do it. My last fight had to be the way it was…
Just to be clear it was my decision. It wasn’t for lack of negotiation. They had the contract in their hands. I told them: ‘No, thanks. It’s all good.’ I appreciate it a lot but I want to go my own way.”Fabricio Werdum, Super Lutas via Bloody Elbow
The MMA legend believes in PFL and also believes it will be the final stop of his MMA journey. He reiterated this when he spoke to MMAFighting.com.
“I think so, yes for sure. When I finish, I don’t think about this now in this moment…I just think about my next fight. But I want to help PFL, too. I want to stay as an ambassador. I want to stay here for the PFL to grow in Brazil, too.”Fabricio Werdum, MMAFighting.com interview
PFL 3, the third fight night of the 2021 season, airs live at 9 P/E on ESPN in the United States. Also on the card is Roufusport product Laura Sanchez and Mohammed Usman, brother of Kamaru Usman.
